Magnolias at Caerhays Castle

by Charles Williams VMH

Discover the breathtaking beauty of the National Collection of Magnolias at Caerhays

Introduction

In 2011, when the book about the history of Caerhays, the families who have lived here, and the gardens themselves, was finally published I vowed never again to undertake the enormous effort in time, research, pictures and proofing necessary to write a second book.

This book is therefore deliberately written in photographs to enable everyone to appreciate and enjoy the great beauty and splendour of the magnolias growing here at Caerhays. You do not have to be a plantsman or horticulturist to be captivated by magnolias; nor do you even need to be a gardener. The flowers speak for themselves!

The story of magnolia arrivals here begins to take shape after 1897. As Ernest Wilson, one of the two great Plant Explorers involved with Caerhays, said “No group of trees and shrubs is more favourably known, or more highly appreciated in gardens than magnolias, and no group produces larger or more abundant blossoms.” A sentiment with which I would thoroughly agree and hope that you will as well when perusing this book.

What other tree could possibly produce hundreds or even thousands of six inch pink and white flowers on every twig in early spring long before the arrival of the leaves?

The story of the garden here is about continuity of family ownership and the continuity of exceptional plantsmen as Head Gardeners all working together

About the Author

Charles Williams is the owner and custodian of the historic Caerhays Estate in Cornwall and the senior partner of Burncoose Nurseries, one of the UK’s leading specialist plant nurseries. Under his stewardship, Caerhays is home to a renowned Plant Heritage National Collection of Magnolias.

His great-grandfather, J.C. Williams, famously bred the original x williamsii strain of camellias in the 1920s—plants that went on to transform camellia cultivation around the world. Today, Charles continues this legacy of botanical innovation and passion.

A long-standing member of the RHS Rhododendron, Camellia and Magnolia Group, Williams has introduced and championed numerous new magnolias, rhododendrons, and camellias for registration and awards. His work brings together practical expertise, historical knowledge, and a lifelong commitment to conserving and advancing some of the world’s most charismatic ornamental plants.

In this book, he shares his deep experience and enduring enthusiasm for magnolias, offering readers an insider’s view of their cultivation, history, and unrivalled beauty.
